'Sex Ring King' Pleads Guilty In Federal Court

DETROIT (WWJ) Greg Carr, the sex ring king who built Miami Companions into one of the largest prostitution services in the country, until it was busted in Detroit, could spend up to 27 months in prison after pleading guilty Thursday in federal court.

The Dearborn Heights native will be sentenced May 12 in U.S. District Court in Detroit.

Carr, a former Central Michigan University student, was facing 11 counts of conspiracy to coerce and entice prostitution, coercion and enticement of prostitution, and conspiracy to commit money laundering. The most severe charge carries a 20-year, $500,000 penalty.

He reached a plea deal with federal prosecutors to plead guilty to money laundering conspiracy and conspiracy to persuade or entice someone to engage in prostitution. U.S. District Judge Arthur J. Tarnow could send him to prison for up to 25 years, but Carr's guideline range is 21-27 months in prison.

Carr also agreed to forfeit more than $14,000 seized by investigators from two bank accounts.

He is the fourth person charged in the case to reach a plea deal with federal prosecutors, who busted the sex ring last summer. The U.S. Attorney's Office labeled Miami Companions one of the country's largest escort services, dispatching dozens of prostitutes to hotels and beachfront villas around the world. And Metro Detroit was one of the busiest stops on the tour.

The Miami Companions case has titillated the public and raised anxiety levels among the sex ring's clients from Metro Detroit as defense lawyer Paul DeCailly successfully fought federal prosecutors for access to the escort service's not-so-little black book.

The fate of the Miami Companions black book and whether the public will ever have access to the names of more than 30,000 clients, job details and sexual preferences was unclear.
