Study: Detroit Council Among Most Expensive To Taxpayers
DETROIT (WWJ) - A new report finds that the Detroit City Council is one of the most expensive to the taxpayer.
The Pew Charitable Trusts report bases its findings on the amount of money from the general fund that's used to finance a city council. A total of $13 million is spent on Detroit's council and staffers annually - that represents 1 percent of the total general fund. That's the highest percentage of the 15 cities studied by Pew Charitable Trusts.
The Detroit News also reports city taxpayers pay out $14.53 for each person, which, other than Washington D.C., is higher than any city. But when you consider council member salaries, which are $73,500 a year - it's well below the $178,000 a year that Los Angeles council members receive.
