Ontario Woman Sues Over Strip-Search At Ambassador Bridge

DETROIT (WWJ) –  An angry and embarrassed Ontario woman who says she was strip-searched at the Ambassador Bridge without justification has sued two U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents.

The Detroit Free Press says Loretta Van Beek of Stratford filed the suit in Detroit federal court against the unnamed agents. She says she was en route to her Georgia vacation home last March when one agent strip-searched and groped her while the other one watched.

Van Beek says she was detained for two hours, then sent to a windowless cell and ordered to strip because she neglected to disclose she had raspberries in her vehicle.

The lawsuit claims one agent aggressively groped her breasts and genital area while the other watched. Van Beek says she was then photographed and fingerprinted and sent back to Canada.

Attorney S. Thomas Wienner of Rochester tells the Free Press the experience traumatized Van Beek and “She’s concerned she might not be the only victim.”

Customs and Border Patrol says it cannot comment on pending litigation.

She was treated in such a shoddy way because she is a basically law-abiding lady who would not be expected to fight back. Now, if she was a seriously bad apple who snuck into the U.S., we would release her with an order (guaranteed to be ignored) to appear in court in 14 months. Thanks for all the great border protection Uncle Sam!

    1. moose says:

She was denied entry. There is more to the story than fruit. I bet she has a criminal history she did not tell the media about.

      1. Deano says:

yep. That totally justifies a cavity search. Thanks Captain Freedom!

      2. Archie1954 says:

She has a home in Georgia so she probably crosses a couple of times a year at least. I hope she gets the message and sells it. I wonder if she was good looking and what the sexual preferences of those female border guards were.

      3. jack says:

Or…………she complained! Think about it moose. You either submit to Big Brother mentality (aka US of A) or you leave. Personally…I’d choose to leave. I wouldn’t need to be denied access because I have no use for your BS. Just shows to go ya….some boder guards must not be getting it at home.

      4. Benoît Côté says:

In Canada, the customs officer has full power not refuse admittance: his or her decision, no need to justify. It may well be similar for U.S. Customs agents.

      5. Craig Murray says:

        Moose
whenever the US customs ‘investigates’ you they routinely deny you entry. It is moronic, it is normal. They could refuse you entry and send you back, they could investigate and let you in, instead they do a bit of both, investigate then refuse. I had a friend who does not speak English well. Crossing over they asked if she had anything, she said she had ‘Pot’. Well they went insane, pulled everything apart, tried to get her to sign a confession that she was smuggling narcotics right up until one of the searchers asked her about the large cast iron pot in the trunk of the car. She explained that yes, that was her pot. After several hours of this they bundled everything up and refused her entry

      6. Pishaw says:

Yea, that’s it! She’s really the Joker! Yea, she was on her way her to steal, um, ice cream! To go with the berries! Yea, that’s it!

You do believe us, right? We ARE just defending your freedom by infringing on your rights. Don’t YOU love America? If you hadn’t done anything, we wouldn’t be searching you. FEAR! FEAR! FEAR!

  2. Dave says:

When you pay the journalist next to NOTHING what do you expect. Litigation or legislation, whats the difference to the new breed journalist. After all these are the same breed of journalist that vetted Obama. Right?

    1. Big Birther says:

Obama was vetted? When did that happen? Damn I missed that one. Must have happened in the dead of the night. Maybe took 2 or 3 minutes I suppose

      1. Joshua says:

“Corvetted”f….he traded in his Chrysler 300 on one in order not to look too black to get elected. wanted to appeal to the Hollywood Crowd for campaign contributions. Michael Moore LOVES vettes.

    2. Luke says:

Your kidding right? Obama was never vetted. If he had been he would be in Levenworth right now.

    3. walter says:

So in other words, if you don’t pay them (what you consider) enough, you shouldn’t expect them to be competent? Anyone interested in journalism should know going into it that they gravy train days are over. If they want a job with more pay choose a different profession; otherwise take pride in your work.

  3. Dave says:

legislation, litigation – that’s a stretch even for spell wrecker…

Morale of the story….always give the feds the raspberries?
Was there an agricultural threat to America rebuffed by this

Did the feds return the favor and give her the raspberries?

  10. entwise says:

I hope this is written tongue in cheek, George. Having your breasts groped is not what one expects at a border crossing and is not appropriate even during a time of war (if that is indeed, the time that we are now in). Besides how many issues have we really had with Canadian females hiding explosives in their breasts or genital areas? There is no evidence that these invasive measures save lives. They only give power to those who seek out these positions so they can feel superior to those people who have no other choice but to submit to their “precautions”.

    1. Denise says:

      I agree with you 100%

    2. Harold says:

Well….I guess explosives wouldn’t be a huge problem with Canadian females ….but what if she was covertly wearing falsies and was hiding giant crabs in her genitals area…WE SURE wouldn’t want those in this country…..She might lure in some unsuspecting citizen with those nice falsies….and then give the unsuspecting citizen a case o’ crabs…..So better that border customs grope her thoroughly before entry…never can be too safe!!

    3. Cal Hunter says:

No right. We’rte not at war. Our people in Afghanistan and Iraq are on vacation… some of them just have to return in body bags but hey… it’s not war!

Its time to name the agents and post their pictures. Despicable behavior like this should not be covered up.

    1. HP_Loveshaft says:

It’s time for you to take your head out of your rear. You do realize you’ve not getting the whole story, right? Perhaps the woman was obstructive or combative. Perhaps she exhibited suspicious behavior.

I hope you’re never selected for jury duty. Your eagerness to be simultaneously uninformed and judgmental poses a danger to our justice system.

      1. Mark Stockman says:

So, if you are rude or argumentative, that gives the cops the right to sexually assault you? That’s not the America I want to live in.

      2. L Holland says:

Justice system? What do you know about it? You actually believe that
there are statutes to protect the borders from people with ‘bad attitudes’, and
that there is a legal definition, supportable through jurisprudence and due process that constitutes ‘suspicious behavior’ that wouldnt be processed in either the US or Canada? Your whistling through your hat, mate.
There are proper procedures in place that make the behavior of the agents
either appropriate or not. The trauma of a lawsuit, I assure you through personal experience, is no small matter. If she and her attorney are willing to face this, and the courts to hear it,
I guarantee, the customs agents need to be held accountable. To what degree is up to the courts and the jury.

      3. jack says:

Love…come on now. Your really are trying to shaft us. If you have two eyes, a nose, a mouth, and hair or lack of hair…in the US this is grounds for detainment. And especially by girly-boy border guards.

      4. Joanne Whirly says:

of course no search would have been warranted if she hadn’t been breaking the law. Don’t liek the law – have your representatives change it until then someone that apparently crosses the boarder reasonably frequently should be familiar with the regulation and the consequences. Another case of break the law but it should be OK. Kind of like the Arizona deal with not being able to ask someone who you stopepd for speeding if they are here ILLEGALLY becasue it “could be abused” (somehow – still don’t understand that reasoning – it’s not like if you are a legal resident you’re going to accidentally get locked up) – you can be stopped without due cause now and the police pay the price when they do it. So the real danger is that someone who has no rights under our Constitution maybe gets stopped incorrectly and is found out. Someone that is here legally gets profiled and stopped for no reason feel free to sue the cops then. The answer is absolutely not to keep the question from being asked! So in this situation what’s the answer – don’t ever search anyone that has already attempted to bring in contraband becasue the search itself could be abused? Wow that’s twisted logic. I suppose that alot of you folsk are the ones that were lambasting thsoe speaking out about thesupposed random grope searches at the airport because it coud possibly (never been proven) prevent a terrorist getting on a plane. Man what sheep you people are…

      5. Fred says:

Joanne clearly misses the point that there is a perception that far more dangerous people likely make it through all the time unchallenged – but we are certain to stop and search the evil raspberry smugglers!

we are in for more of this ridiculous behavior. Just think, if they threaten to shut down security by striking, do you think Obama will act the same way Reagan did with the PATCO strike? We are in deep doo doo

  16. Sheri says:

It is obviousl that you don’t know the difference between being strip searched and being molested – THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE… Nobody should be subject to this kind of invasive search without just cause. That is why profiling like is done in Israel is valid. It seems that you were molested and you don’t get it – This woman was molested (if indeed her story is true) and she perfectly understood what happened to her.

    1. George Lutz says:

All I’m saying here is that we need to get used to what is quickly becoming a new paradigm in national security and safety proceedures. The personal attacks on me are telling that we, as a nation, are having difficulty accepting this fact. September 11th changed the world and the way we deal with those in it. In light of this, we need to rally behind our law enforcement, military, and national security officers. I’m not saying that there shouldn’t be an investigation into this woman’s situation. However, just because her private areas were touched doesn’t mean that there was foul play if the officers had reasonable suspicion of something “not quite right” with her.

    2. Donna says:

George, we are fast becoming a nation of WIMPS because of 9/11 and you say that’s ok and expected? I disagree. If the bad guys want to bomb us, they will find a way and none of this bs will stop it. The shoe bomber tried, now we, THE ONLY NATION IN THE WORD have to remove our shoes before boarding a plane. Then the underwear bomber, now we have to be seen in through our underwear or have the waistband felt and/or looked at. The moment they try bringing some explosives via their body ‘cavity’….let the TSA just TRY to cavity check everyone, LOL. We are giving in to them already…but changing the way we live and taking our own liberties away, THEY WIN. They are SUCCESSFUL.

    3. Ornley Gumfudgen says:

      George
If ya actually believe that strip searchin an body cavity searchin people are gonna make ya safer yer really dumber than th dumb remarks yer makin here.

What’s happenin at our Airports an entry points ta th US is nothin more than a placebo.

If th Feds were genuinely consarned about our safety they would do somethang about th millions of illegals, includin what ever thair carryin, across our nation’s borders annually.

Our employees just demand more money, more “authority” and more control with which our Congress just rubberstamps their requests. Believe me when I tell you the average man in the street does not approve of these agencies or their lousy behavior. One day when this system goes completely broke, which is not far away, then these costumed clowns will have nothing to do as they system they supposedly worked for is out of business. It is such a shame that some narrow minded individuals jump all over this as just more Canadian wining, which just increases animosity on both sides. I have met Americans in the past, and guess what? They are just like us. Some idiots and some decent. Comments like yours remind us that there are decents, and that just as in Canada, you have a political and legal system that is weighted toward greed rather than for the good of the people. Egypt is a classical example. I fear there is more of the same coming in other parts of the world. Can we induce change? Not likely. The powers that be will stop at nothing to keep hold of that same power. Anyone who still believes in true democracy best just step to the back of the bus lest you be pushed UNDER it.

You are absolutely correct! The Regime is conditioning us for serfdom.

  43. John says:

Have any of you seen the video “World Government Forming Now” by Irvin Baxter? Endtime.com is the website you can upload the video. This explains how we will continue to lose our freedoms. Also, Islam Discovered in the Bible is a very good video to help you better understand the Egyptian crisis. It’s amazing that all this stuff is in your Bible and was written over 2000 years ago.

  44. Mark Johnson says:

This is a one sided news story more akin to gossip then full disclosure. You folks are taking this lady at her word. I’m making assumptions myself here, but did it occur to you that she is just saying these things to gin up sympathy for her plight. Patting someone down looking for contraband is not a strip search. I don’t know the full story, but there has got to be more to it. Do you folks know how many body carrying narco smugglers have been arrested in the past few years. This woman is a 46 year old Canadian citizen, wouldn’t you wonder why she has a home in Georgia? Sounds like there might be an issue for illegal residency in the US as well.

    1. MarshRat1 says:

People have the right to purchase land anywhere they are able.
Americans purchase land here in the North also.
She did not say she owned it.
      It was her vacation spot.
I’m just hoping our Canadian agents are roughing up U.S citizens as well.
      (ha.. I highly doubt that)
Yes the raspberries are probably U.S. origin. unless frozen.
But just think of what a mad scientist can do with a pac of raspberries..
      Oooooo SCARY !!
This border stuff is getting WAY out of hand..
I could jabber about this for hours. But, it only raises blood pressure.
STAY IN Canada.. Border lock down..
see how fast they loosen the ties that bind.
      Communism at it’s highest there.
BUT, the governments on both sides have money grabs galore.
AND both sides are still allowing illegals from Eastern Countries ( who Do blow things up ) into our countries.
Giving them funds. homes. jobs. and futures while our Homegrown futures are going down the toilet.
      Oooooo don’t get me started..

    2. Rick says:

MJ….she’s a snowbird like several other Canadians that I know. They have homes both in FLA and Canada.

    3. Mark Stockman says:

Umm. . . because Georgia is a heck of a lot warmer than Canada this time of year? I don’t automatically believe her, but I don’t automatically side with the Feds as you seem to be doing. “I don’t know the full story, but there has got to be more to it.” Of course. Our government and its employees are perfect- no mistakes ever, no bad apples in government employ. And if you believe that, I have an oceanfront condo in Arizona to sell you.

      1. urachucklehed says:

so you do automatically believe her…

  45. Veiled Profit says:

Simple solution: If she had worn a burqa, they would never have even dared to question her.

  46. MaryAnne says:

Maybe they examined her genitals because since she had undeclared raspberries then she might possibly have an undeclared cherry elsewhere.
Seriously though, this is a travesty and I think the lawsuit should be a criminal one. This was probably just performed by a couple of perverts as a way to get their jollies off.

    1. Rick says:

Maybe they thought they would find a rasberry popsicle too.

  47. Stan says:

It’s impossible that your post is serious. Nobody can be this lacking in common sense.

  48. Ahmad Khartoumi says:

You are beyond crazy, George Lutz. How many Canadian or US citizens do you think are likely to do something as bizarre as having a plastic surgeon plant explosives in breasts or elsewhere as you describe? The answer is NONE.

If you and your wife enjoy body cavity searches, that’s your business – have fun – but who is the govt. targeting? Good, law-abiding normal citizens. Apparently, you’ve got your head so far up “there” you can’t see what’s really going on. Here’s a clue: they’re not really looking for terrorists, but don’t tell anyone. .

    1. Bass Pro says:

      George

You hooked a strange one here
If were me I’d throw it back…
Some of those strange species carry worms…
