Select Fire Departments Will Benefit From Grants

DETROIT (WWJ) — U.S. Sens. Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow, both D-Mich., announced more than $1.4 million in federal grants for nine fire departments in Michigan.

The grants come through the Department of Homeland Security Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

The funding will be used to help address a variety of equipment, training, staffing and other firefighter-related and EMS needs.

"Making sure our fire departments are properly equipped for emergency situations is a critical component of ensuring safety in our communities," Levin said. "These grants will enhance readiness in these cities by giving our first responders tools they need."

"Michigan's firefighters provide invaluable, courageous service to communities across our state," Stabenow said. "These grants will help fund the best training and equipment they need to perform their duties safely."

Dearborn Heights Fire Department will receive funds from the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program. Funds under the SAFER program are intended to support the hiring of firefighters and the recruitment and retention of volunteer firefighters.
