Matt Dery's Daily Update 2-24-11

Another workout this morning for the Tigers without Miguel Cabrera, his agent reportedly has met with Dave Dombrowski. There is an update on Cabrera's status expected later on this afternoon. Jim Leyland has his lineup set up for tomorrow's exhibition opener against Florida Southern with Victor Martinez hitting cleanup and DH'ing. Ryan Streeby takes Cabrera's spot at first. Leyland says his starters will get just one at bat. Andy Oliver gets the start for the Tigers.

NBA trade deadline at 3pm today, ESPN.com's Marc Stein is reporting that the Dallas Mavericks may make on last ditched effort to pry Tayshaun Prince away from the Pistons. Yahoo Sports reports that the Pistons would not deal Prince to the Mavs for Caron Butler and a first round pick because Prince is more valuable in a sign and trade this summer.

At the NFL combine in Indianapolis Lions Coach Jim Schwartz has not spoken and as always very tight lipped. Schwartz would not comment on where Matthew Stafford is in his rehab. When asked when he believes his team will close the gap on the Bears and Packers, Schwartz says "we are not trying to close the gap, that's not our objective.

Red Wings skate with Dallas at the Joe tonight. Jimmy Howard gets the start in goal for Detroit. Chris Osgood said this morning after the skate he is targeting March 9th against the Kings as his return date.
