Storm Causing Airport Delays

ROMULUS (WWJ) - The worst of the storm may have missed Metro Detroit, but snow and high winds, even thunderstorms are causing flight delays at airports to the east.

WWJ Newsradio 950 spoke with Metro Airport's public affairs director, Mike Conway.

"My understand is that the storms that went through here are creating wind at some airports east of us. Which, at some airports, depending on their runway configuration, can be a lot to deal with," he said.

Conway notes that when the system is backed up at major airports like New York's JFK, it creates problems everywhere.

"When there are 'irregular operations' at some of the busiest airports it tends to have a ripple effect throughout the air transportation system."

Conway says the best thing to do if you are headed to the east coast is to check your carrier's web site for the latest info.

"Every airline, on their homepage, has a way to click flight status.  You type in your flight number and that's the fastest way, actually, to find out the up-to-date status of your flight," Conway said.

Early Friday afternoon, Philadelphia's airport had delays in excess of three hours, and there was a two and a half hour delay at JFK.   Stay with WWJ for the latest.
