'Drive Angry' Stalls At Weekend Box Office

SOUTHFIELD (WWJ/AP) - The weekend box office belonged to a Shakespearean gang of garden gnomes.

Walt Disney's ``Gnomeo & Juliet,'' an animated 3-D twist on ``Romeo and Juliet,'' took in $14.2 million in its third week of release. That was good enough to lead the weekend box office, according to studio estimates Sunday.

``Gnomeo & Juliet" upset two highly-anticipated debut flicks: 'Hall Pass' and 'Drive Angry'.

As for 'Drive Angry' -- the latest effort from Nicolas Cage -- if you're up for an adrenaline rush, then this movie could be just the thing for you. Keep in mind, though, that there's a whole lot of gore to go along with it.

As for the story itself, the original screenplay was co-written by Patrick Lussier and Todd Farmer. The two collaborated previously on 'My Bloody Valentine 3D'. Although the plot is creative enough, again, it involves scene after scene of blood and guts. Although some people in the preview audience cringed at the nonstop bloody mayhem, others were more appreciative -- so much so that there was scattered applause when the movie wrapped up and the credits began to roll.

As for its performance at the box office, it took in just $5.1 million in its debut weekend.
