Glenn Beck Bashes Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) – Fox News commentator Glenn Beck is taking a big swipe at Detroit — comparing the city to Hiroshima after it was hit by an atomic bomb.

Beck said Hiroshima was able to rebuild after decades of work.

“But take a look at Detroit today,” Beck said. “One city embraced the free-market system and the entrepreneurial spirit; the other embraced progressive policies and corrupt government and unions and companies that weren’t allowed to fail and they should’ve failed cause they stunk on ice.”

Beck was critical of the government’s auto industry bailout, Detroit’s poverty and graduation rates, and the Democratic leadership in the city over the past half-century.

Beck, though, mistakenly identified Ford as getting a government bailout — a bailout that began under President Bush.

Tuesday, members of the Detroit City Council had a few choice comments for the conservative talk show host. “This attack, mindless attack, on Detroit and the auto industry, we ought not stand for it,” JoAnn Watson said.

“Glenn Beck’s an idiot,” said Ken Cockrel.

Glen Beck should seek professional help. He is one disturbed person. He must have crawled out from under the same rock as Rush Limbaugh.

    1. Steve says:

Facts are facts!!! He is only stating the obvious. Sometimes the truth hurts Jim. While the D has made positive strides under Mayor Bing, much still needs to be done.

      1. Rosco says:

I’m almost certain that labor unions are not nation/city specific.

    2. TaterSalad says:

Take a look around people. He is correct on this one. Since Mayor Coleman Young told “Whitie” to hit 8-maile the city has went “downhill” ever since. This can NOT be argued can it? The progressives have run it into the ground with their give me my entitlements: attitude and the end result is what you see!

This is the City of Detroit, now and likely into the future. This what the Progressive, liberal, entitlement ideology and culture that is breed into the City and its inhabitants by people who preach that liberalism is the only path to a greater life. “Poverty Pimps” such as Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson love to have cities like this so they have a pulpit to spread their own type of ideology.

Why would anyone care what the former radio “Zookeeper” has to say about anything? He’s just a blowhard with an uninformed opinion, like all of talk radio. This is just another example why everyone laughs at him and his ilk.

  2. LAL29 says:

Wow, an entertainer that doesn’t have his material right. How can you make statements and be held “credible” if you don’t know what you are talking about ?

People really listen to this tool ?!

  3. rick says:

“Stand for something or fall for everything ” Glenn is villanized by those who are ignorant to his message and afraid of the TRUTH .He has more courage than anyone on television. The frustration for critics is that he has a expansive team of researchers that will never report information without clear evidence of FACTS. The frustration from the far left is Glenn stands for Truth with a motive in educating Americans on the motivation for liberals to literally destroy our founding principals in exchange for entitlements. What history shows,is that turns into dictatorships ,lead by “organizers” (ring a bell ?) who offer you candy then shoot you in streets.By the way Robin Williams began every stage show with “where am I ? KABUL? We understand Detroit pride, but the point is our city government and auto unions for 50 years are the most corrupt in USA (reported on CBS) and prohibits free enteprise from adjusting to economic conditions. Hopefully Mayor Bing is bringing integrity to the city and Snyder know how to the harsh realities of state. Glenn is HUGE in exposing the nations apathy and ignorance that ultimately put the breaks on this clearly socialist administration.

    1. Cheryl McDonald says:

      Amen Rick… well said!

    2. Rosco says:

Save for hare-brained conspiracies concerning magnates he disagrees with philosophically/politically.

    3. Soul of Wit says:

Facts? You mean facts like Ford took a bailout? My conservative friends think that Beck is a pitiable loon. You mentioned socialism. Beck and his team couldn’t define socialism if given a week to do so. Reactionary neoconservatism wants to take this country back to the 19th (18th?) century. The majority of proud Americans say, “No thanks.”

Learn from history or repeat it. 2012 = 1996.

      1. RickVB says:

You clearly don’t have any conservative friends (but of course progressives NEVER exaggerate…), as no conservatives think that “Beck is pitiable loon”.

Yes, it’s a fact that the auto makers were NOT allowed to fail – and his accidental misuse of Ford in that paragraph doesn’t change that FACT. If you ever actually listened to Glenn, you’d know that he frequently lauds Ford for NOT taking bailout money, so he does know it. He just speaks entirely extemporaneously, unlike your hero how can’t talk to a kindergarten class without a teleprompter…

      2. RickVB says:

Oh, and by the way, progressives like to wish that 2012 will be like 1996 politically, but since we are heading for total economic collapse this year, it’s a good bet it’s going to be more like 2010…

  4. jima says:

Facts? Who needs them when you can create your own?
Detroit is a mess, but that little man needs help.

  5. DEW530 says:

I regret that there is simply not enough space for me to fully express my complete loathing for Beck and his potty-pal, Limbaugh! Therefore, I’ will confine my comments to this story:
    1. Clearly, he has no clue as to the real situation in this city.
    2. Clearly, he once again demonstrates his complete lack of knowledge of the suto industry and the intricacies of that business.
    3. Clearly, he shows us yet again his blindness to the reality that MOST of our current financial problems began with the Bush (number 2) administration, and that the current administraion is desparately trying to clean up an obviously inhereited stinking pile.
    4. Clearly, he is attempting once again to justify his own miserable existence by groundlessly criticizing Detroit and all of the revitalizing, bootstrap efforts underway by Mayor Bing and the rest of the city’s leadership and citizens.

Anybody know where we can get an extra huge size roll of duct tape? Heaven knows it will take at least that much much to cover Beck’s monstrous pie hole! Too bad his brain is not as big as his mouth. Oh, wait. The Botanical Gardens just named a flower after him: it is the Bloomin’ Idiot.

    1. Diane Silvercastle says:

The free trade agreement was suicide.

      1. harlan hamilton says:

Lets see here, they voted for Kwame like he was the New Messiah I believe twice! And they worshiped The Great Racist Coleman Young for how many decades. Both of these great leaders that were worshiped by the majority of the city ran the city into the burned out corrupt hole that it is today. A city where the average home price is somewhat lower than that of a 5 year old Hyundai.
Now today they may actually have a respectable leader in Dave Bing but he must work through the layers of corruption that have built up over the last 3 or 4 decades & on top of that he has to fight through the Policies of our prior corrupt politicians that embraced NAFTA to help line the pockets of their CEO bedfellows by sending Detroit / Michigan / U.S. jobs to Canada, Mexico & Asian countries. It may be a little too late for Detroit to recover from the damage that has already occurred unless we see new political leadership that actually cares more about U.S. citizens than what is P.C. for illegal aliens, or sending Billions to support many countries around the world while the world got to watch the citizens of New Orleans drown, & cities like Detroit burn to the ground. Don’t be so naive as to invite people like Glen Beck to Detroit so that they may video the 10 or 20 blocks of grandeur amid the thousands of blocks that resemble landfills or burned out Hiroshima of 60 years ago not the Hiroshima of today. Unfortunately the City of Detroit has 60 plus years of corrupt anti american politicians from its corrupt Mayors all the way up to our corrupt presidents that worked diligently to line the pockets of a many corporations at the expense of the American People. I would very much like to see Detroit return to the grandeur of many years ago however the wealthiest of the Detroit suburbs are going the same way. The grand city of Troy, MI. is closing its public library & has a 50% – 80% vacancy of its commercial property. The great corridor of Bloomfield Hills has its bookstore, restaurant & clothing store now boarded up. The Summit Place mall of Waterford resembles an old Colorado mining town from the 1800’s along with the cities of Pontiac, Saginaw & many others where you may have your pick of large homes that are valued at $5 – $10k or less.
In recap Detroit has fallen victim to the scourge of corruption & plight just as the rest of the country is falling victim to. God save us all from the politicians..

    2. RickVB says:

“3. Clearly, he shows us yet again his blindness to the reality that MOST of our current financial problems began with the Bush (number 2) administration, and that the current administraion is desparately trying to clean up an obviously inhereited stinking pile.”

Dew, seriously, ask yourself when EXACTLY did the current (yes, it’s not over) financial slide begin. The answer is 2007, exactly when Democrats took over the entire legislative branch of government, and who set the budget, and legislate in case you’d forgotten. Please, expressing your self-delusions doesn’t help in the debate.

  6. Overtime says:

Beck was talking about Detroit. Ford is located in Dearborn. Government Motors is located in Detroit. Hmmm . . . looks like Beck was right . . . well lets just bash him anyway because he’s wrong, Detroit is a beautiful city! There is no crime here. It’s not run by corrupt politicians. It’s not bankrupt. Everything is perfect. What a wonderful place to live!

  7. clint says:

    As an EX-Detroiter:
Clearly, Mr. Beck is correct about Detroit. Detroits failings began in the 1960’s and went downhill with the racist Coleman Young at the head. The city is full of residents who demand handouts. The liberals can only call people names when the facts don’t back them up. It’s time Detroiters got off the keester and started working to clean up the city.

  8. Paul Taros says:

Glenn is 100% correct. Detroit is a city that has failed under progressive leadership. The majority of the citizens of Detroit vote for who promises them the most.

  9. Rgv says:

I’m a Detroit res my ? 2 bombs on the japs .in 1944 now look at them best cars in world 2 great city’s . In 1950. 1.7 million in Detroit .in 2011 800,000 .Glen was right parts of Detroit look like the bomb was droped last week but we are # 1 with city workers going to jail. Even Gov Jen left the state

  10. Wong says:

If you take the time, as I did, to read all the comments and if you are honest, you will see that the Beck supports speak from fact and the haters only use hate. I love you all. TO the haters please pull you heads out of the sand. If any of you haters ever REALLY listened to Beck you’d know that he does squarely put the blame on Bush for starting the problems we are in. And he blames the current admin for CONTINUING them.

  11. B says:

What most of the people who are bashing Glenn here fail to realize… Hiroshima was burned out and flattened to the ground… not to much like areas of Detroit currently

Now look at 50 + years later… go on-line and look at the pictures of Hiroshima
today… it’s a beautiful city… and then look at pictures of Detroit 50 years ago, it was a beautiful place…

But, today it is an embarrassment (and if your not embarrassed, that could be part of the problem)… no one dropped an atomic bomb on Detroit… the people (residents & politicians) did this to their OWN CITY!!!!…. This is the result of corrupt politicians who ran on and used the race card like it was a debit card… to someone elses bank account. It is the result of an unsustainable entitlement system promoted and fostered by the unions and political wh0res that just wanted to stay in power in the city so as not to loose that debit card to someone elses account.

Glenn is right when he speaks of Detroit as an embarrassment to our country and failure of democracy and capitalism.

    1. Gina Reilly says:

actually it started just after WWII

  12. Cheryl McDonald says:

People can’t handle the “Truth”… Born and raised in Detroit I have seen the distruction. There is nothing left of my so called neighborhood. As a major City there is nothing of any value left in the downtown either in my option. Glenn Beck speaks the truth… Wake Up people.

  13. Matt Marko says:

This comparison bas been passed around tbe internet for years. Its point is to contrast socialist vs pro business politics. Its a shame Detroit was used as the example but reality hurts and should be learned from.

  14. HW says:

It is those like drew530 who “CLEARLY” have no clue as to the situation in this city!!! As long as there are those like him who continue to refuse to honestly look around them and see the realitites that are obvious, Detroit’s recovery will be very slow at best.

  15. Big Thunder says:

A 24% high school graduation rate. That means more than 1 in 4 students will graduate and leave the city to make a living. The rest will be incapable of leaving and remain in poverty. Many of those will either turn to crime, look for a government handout or both.
I’ve talked to many people who have left the city (black and white) that were desparate to free themselves of it and its crime. Only until the facts are faced can Detroit really progress. I do not wish to see the city as it is or continue to go in the direction its going. I’d love to see it blossom. Unless something drastic is done, what will Detroit be like in another 50 years? Graduation rates will only drop as high school dropouts become parents (single mothers / absent fathers). Their kids follow in their footsteps and follow the crowd.
Michigan’s 2 largest exports are College Graduates and jobs.
    Detroit’s largest export is crime.
    Detroit is dying.

  16. REBEL says:

I took my 90 year old mother in law to Detroit as she had not been there in 30 years and she wanted to see were she grew up before she died (died this past July). Her comment was “What the Hell Happend to my Detroit – get me out of here!”
We can blame People like Beck, etc. – but the real blame falls on those who govern and live in the city – wake up Detroit the world has passed you.

  17. A Detroit Native says:

Glen Beck has a national audience and Detroit does not. The perception of Detroit is broadcasted by media pundits, right or wrong. I see two things affecting Detroit’s survival, 1) the collapse of Detroit automotive and the out sourced or in-sourced employment loss and 2) the racial divide that plagues this city since 1943. Detroit has no money and without investment will not recover. Who, either white or black, will pour the needed magnitdue investment into the city?

  18. Hryhoriy says:

Thank God that our country still has a patriot like Glenn Beck! Unlike most ignorant citizens, he and the rest of us understand that the only way to derive prosperity for Detroit and our country is to rid ourselves of the communist self-proclaimed ‘progressives’ and their parasitic followers. Until that occurs, Detroit will remain doomed – no doubt about it.

  19. Diane Silvercastle says:

Don’t compare Unions to city corruption. Union are civil collective bargaining. They work so well that I believe they are the Pinnacle of United States glory.

If you would only clean up your exaggerations people might listen to you.

By the way do you have a job? Thank a teacher

  20. Diane Silvercastle says:

There has been a 30 year war against Detroit and Michigan and of course that was the only way to try to crack the walls of fighting for higher standards for the middle class by the unions. The corporations managed to stay alive but where else to attack then Detroit and Michigan. Long range planning does produce results but it is not invisible.

  21. Hryhoriy says:

Hard work, perseverance, liberty and small government have been hallmarks of America’s leadership in this world. We thank God every day for the continued implosion of our unions. Once doesn’t need to look very far either. The automotive companies operating in US southern states are very profitable and never have to fear the prospect of socialist/communist UAW attempting to squeeze the Ameircan consumer or local governments. The sooner we force them out of our country, the sooner we can return to economic prosperity and stable government. Parasites like the liberal ‘progressives’ must be exterminated for everyone’s benefit. Some people use words such as ‘war’ to deliver their message – once again, revealing nothing more than ignorance. LIberals are entirely incapable of spirited debate because they have never had TRUTH on their side.

  22. David says:

Hey, Beck….Get a real job …… it is easy to pick on people/cities when they are down but Detroit helped to save this nation in WW II …….. and think of all the other gifts that Detroit has given to this nation of ours.

    1. RickVB says:

David, wow, you’re still resorting to the “Detroit saved us during WWII” argument? That was over 60 years ago, and in the intervening time the city has received BILLIONS in federal aid (and since it’s residents pay relatively little income tax, it amounts to a giant gift from the rest of the country). How does that figure into your balance of obligations?

  23. TKO says:

What really baffles me is anyone that refers to what was LOANED to GM and Chrysler as a bailout. Chrysler and GM are paying back those LOANS with interested much quicker than you pay back your mortgage, I’m sure. The only real BAILOUT was to the banking industry, but everyone seems to forget that point. And the reason GM and Chrysler needed to take a loan from the government was because those same banks after getting REAL BAILOUT money (not being repaid) wouldn’t loan it to them any more.

  24. S.VISGER says:

BOTTOM LINE, WHEN THE FREETRADE WAS PASSED, THE BIG THREE FIRED ALL OF THEIR CUSTOMERS TO HAVE THEIR “PARTS” MADE IN FOREIGN COUNTRIES. YES— YOU MIGHT BE PAYING LESS AN HOUR AND NOT HAVE UNIONS TO DEAL WITH….

BUT AND I MEAN THE BIG HUGE BUT IS…. ARE THEY ACTUALLY BUYING THEIR CARS? ANSWER?= ABSOLUTELY NOT. CAN’T BUY A NEW CAR IF YOU HAVE NO JOB–RIGHT?

AND YES I KNOW THERE ARE MANY OTHER PIECES TO THE PUZZLE WHY THE BIG THREE FAILED. BUT 2+2=4.. HOW MUCH OF THE HOURLY WAGES WENT BACK INTO THE COMPANIES BY THEIR EMPLOYEES PURCHASING THEIR BRAND NEW CARS EACH AND EVERY YEAR? I’M JUST SAYING, IF MY EMPLOYEES WERE LOYAL TO ME AND BUYING MY VEHICLES , I WOULD BE SMART ENOUGH TO KNOW THAT IF I FIRED THEM TO PAY SOMEONE 0.25 AN HR THAT CHANCES ARE, i JUST ALSO LOST A LOYAL CUSTOMER… AND ABOVE ALL, THEY WANT US TO BUY “AMERICAN” BUT ACTUALLY ALL THE PARTS ARE MADE IN FOREIGN COUNTRIES AND SOMETIMES THE CAR IS MADE HERE…

  25. Hryhoriy says:

That was so accurate!!!….A. Shapton and J. Jackson…nothing more than wanna-be ‘Poverty Pimps’ who themselves have never even held a real job or had to find a way to pay their bills.
Communist progressives are doomed….just like Detroit. Guaranteed.
