Bracelets Will Show Solidarity For Striking DSO Musicians

DETROIT (WWJ) - Striking members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra are getting support from musicians across the nation.

Christopher Durham with the American Federation of Musicians says members of five U.S. Orchestras plan to wear bracelets that read "AFM Solidarity" during their performances.

"It's been very big news, the musicians have been watching this now for more than a year and a half and wishing that cooler heads would prevail and that the employer would come back to the table," Durham says.

"Orchestras throughout the United States are all very supportive, and also, many orchestras have wonderful relationships with their managers, their boards of directors and patrons and many orchestras truly enjoy those relationships and they also want to in some way show support for the musicians in Detroit," says Durham.

Players are participating from the New York Philharmonic, Colorado Symphony, Minnesota and Philadelphia Orchestras and the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C.

A spokeswoman for DSO management says the orchestra is still mulling over the musicians' proposal to return to work immediately while submitting unresolved contract issues to binding arbitration.
