KISSIMMEE, Fla. (WWJ/AP) – The Detroit Tigers lost to the Atlanta Braves 4- 3 on Thursday during exhibition play in Kissimmee.

Brad Penny took to the mound against the Braves on Thursday and gave up five hits for two runs in three innings.

Penny formerly a starter for the St. Louis Cardinals made his first outing  for the Tigers. Penny spent most of last season on the disabled list after having surgery for a torn muscle in his back.

Max Scherzer allowed one hit in three scoreless innings for the Tigers.

“He’s looking real good this spring,”  Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. “I like him a lot. I am not worried about Max Scherzer.”

Tigers star Miguel Cabrera was hitless in three at-bats. He’s 1-for-12 this spring.

Tigers play Friday against Baltimore in Lakeland.
