Warrant Requested In Aiyana Jones' Shooting
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Michigan State Police are asking for a warrant in connection with the death of a 7-year-old Detroit girl who was killed during a police raid on her home.
Aiyana Jones was shot and killed on May 16, 2010 when Detroit police stormed a suspected drug house on Lillibridge Street -- a raid that was being taped by crews from A&E Network's "First 48'' crime reality cable TV show.
State Police are not releasing any names, except to say they are requesting an arrest warrant for a male suspect. Southfield Attorney Geoffey Fieger who represents the Jones family has told WWJ he can't say who the suspect is, but said he "hopes" it is the person who fired the shot that killed the little girl.
Aiyana was on a sofa in the first-floor of the two-family flat when a member of a Detroit police Special Response Team tossed a flash-bang grenade through a window and burst through the front door. Detroit police said an officer's gun accidentally discharged after he was bumped or jostled by the girl's grandmother.
The focus of the raid was Chauncey Owens, the fianc De of Aiyana's aunt. Owens was wanted in the May 14, 2010 shooting death of 17-year-old Je'rean Blake outside a nearby convenience store.
Owens was found in the separate upstairs apartment. He is in custody, awaiting trial in Blake's slaying.
Aiyana's family is suing A&E, claiming the shows' producers encouraged the aggressive police behavior during the raid. The family has filed a lawsuit against the city and the Detroit Police Department.
