High School Senior Succumbs To Cancer

LIVONIA (WWJ) - Livonia's Stevenson High School is mourning the death of one of its students.  The school released a statement, Friday morning, announcing the death of 12th grader Laith Lutfi.

School officials said Lutfi died Thursday following a long battle with cancer.  The news was shared with students at the school, Friday, in a P.A. announcement.

Funeral and burial services have already been held.

Donna McDowell, a spokesperson for Livonia Public Schools, told WWJ Newsradio 950 that they have a specific procedure for handling these types of situations.

"We are looking to support the family, the students, the staff and the parent community so that we can work together to make sure that we honor this student's memory and the family," McDowell said.

McDowell said that counselors and staff members are available if students feel the need to speak with someone.
