"Detroit 1-8-7" Returns; Next Season Still Uncertain

(Detroit-WWJ) The made-in-Motown  TV cop drama "Detroit 1-8-7" returns to ABC Tuesday night for its inaugural season's final three episodes. But its chances of returning for a second season are still up in the air.

The series has been on hiatus and ABC has not said whether it will be renewed for a second season. "Detroit 1-8-7" has enjoyed a favorable reception from critics and usually finished second in its 10 pm Tuesday time slot, behind CBS'  "The Good Wife."

ABC Entertainment Group President Paul Lee told TV critics in January that "Detroit 1-8-7" is more about quality than ratings.  The show's executive producer, David Zabel, hints that the cast and crew would be open to a move to a cable network if ABC doesn't renew it.  Zabel says ABC  "is not the obvious network for a show like this."

Another issue is whether Michigan's lucrative tax credits for movies and television shows will continue.  Gov. Rick Snyder has proposed eliminating the incentive and replacing it with a 25 million dollar cap on credits.  A spokeswoman for the Michigan Film Office says "Detroit 1-8-7" would more than likely qualify for additional credits, but would have to file an application for a second season.
