Child’s Lie Launches Rescue Effort

DETROIT (WWJ) –  A brief scare and then relief, late Friday afternoon, after a report of a young girl falling down a sewer drain turned out to be a false alarm.

Three fire trucks, along with several Detroit Police officers and crews with the Detroit Water and Sewage Department rushed to the scene as part of the search effort for a little girl who had supposedly fallen down into the sewer.

As it turns out, the whole thing was a hoax.

“We got a bogus report from a child who attended the school over there, that she was walking down the street with a friend and that the friend fell in the manhole,” said Detroit Fire Commissioner Fred Wheeler.

“We brought confined space rescue crews out to do a rescue, and we started kind of seeing that there were some parts to the young lady’s story that didn’t fit together,” he said.

Wheeler said the girl eventually confessed to the lie.

It wasn’t immediately clear why the girl, who is said to be in the second grade, may have concocted the story. No word yet on possible charges.
