SoulTracks.com Readers Vote Detroit Soul Music's Greatest City

Readers of SoulTracks (www.soultracks.com), America's most popular soul music Web site, have voted Detroit as the world's greatest soul music city, with more than 30 percent of all votes cast going to the Motor City.

The home of the Motown sound and great soul singers both before and since Motown's heyday, Detroit has long been considered one of the most influential music cities in the world, providing many all time greats in jazz, gospel and, more recently, electronica. But soul music is the genre that has most defined this musical city.

Philadelphia, which was the leading city in the soul music world for most of the 1970s, finished second in the polling, followed by Memphis, the Southern Soul capital.

The Greatest Soul Music City poll is the latest in a series of reader polls over the past two years initiated by SoulTracks which have resulted in seminal lists of the greatest soul albums and songs of each decade that are now being used by radio stations and music stores around the world.
