UM's Spring Commencement Speaker Causing Stir

ANN ARBOR (WWJ) - Governor Rick Snyder, a three degree holder from the University of Michigan, will speak at the school's graduation ceremonies this spring.

But some students there don't want to hear from him because of some of Snyder's proposed budget cuts.

Student Rick Durance heads one of many student groups who are using Facebook asking U of M officials to reconsider their choice.

"The social services are incredibly important whether it's public schooling, health care, elder care, all of these are significant. So, I don't believe that him cutting taxes and then claiming he has to cut social services is appropriate," says Durance.
"We are not asking nor protesting directly against the governor himself, we are asking the governor and the university to consider this and their policy," adds Durance.

Students have scheduled a protest on the Diag Wednesday afternoon at one.
