Dakota High School Student Injured While Crossing Street

MACOMB TWP (WWJ) - A Macomb County student is in critical condition after she was hit by a car while crossing 21 Mile Road.

Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham told WWJ Newsradio 950 that the 18-year old girl was on her way to school when it happened.

"At about 7 a.m. this morning Dakota High School student was on her way to school and she was attempting to cross 21 Mile at Le Grande in Macomb Township when she was struck by an eastbound vehicle," Wickersham said.

The Sheriff said the girl did not cross the street at the light, where pedestrians are supposed to cross.

"There was no light there or cross walk at the spot she was crossing," Wickersham said. "There's a light just West of that intersection where she was crossing and that's where the majority of kids cross. I don't want to place blame on anyone now,  but I think for safety purposes that, you know, the students at Dakota should be crossing at the light...where there's the visibility," he said.

Wickersham said that it was not immediately clear if any charges would be filed.

"Our investigation is still continuing. I can say though, that the driver did stop immediately and has been cooperative with the investigation," Wickersham said.

The injured student was taken to Henry Ford Macomb Hospital where she remained in critical condition, Tuesday afternoon.
