WEST BRANCH (AP) – Humane Society workers say they are caring for 77 cats after a Michigan man who was spending $300 a week on food and kitty litter realized that he could no longer keep up with them.

The Grand Rapids Press reports the man sought help, and humane society officials responded by trying to catch and rescue as many of the cats as they could from a house, garage and small barn on the man’s property near West Branch.

The Humane Society of West Michigan is now caring for the 77 rescued cats. Humane Society spokeswoman Nicole Cook says another 10 to 20 cats remain at the property and will be captured by other organizations.

Cook said the humane society hopes to adopt as many of the cats as possible.
