WSU To Tighten Admission Standards

DETROIT (WWJ) - Wayne State University is looking to revise its admission policies, making it tougher for incoming freshmen to get accepted to the school.

Wayne State accepts eight out of ten incoming freshman. The school requires incoming students to have a grade point average of 2.75 and an ACT score of 17.

However, the university has a disappointing graduation rate of 23 percent, which is well below the national average.

Ron Brown, the leader of the task force, said there should be transparency about that rate.

"It's not fair to have the student take out loans and be in debt almost the day that they get here, and not know from statistical data," Brown said.

Some think the effort to make admission policies stricter is taking a step backward. Instead, they think the university should reevaluate its role in the education of students.

"As a major urban university, it is the opportunity for many persons to be the first in college in their family. The university is expected to provide solutions, not to run away from society's challenges," WSU professor Dr. Jose Cuello told The South End, the school's student-run newspaper.

WSU has had a tradition of making education available to a wide range of students.
