Michigan’s defeat to Duke Sunday in the Round of 32 in the NCAA tournament wasn’t necessarily about the present.
And it certainly wasn’t about the past and the Fab 5, whose self-promotion, self-embellishment and self-importance in an ESPN documentary last week brought back memories of the analog age.
It was about the future.
Even if the Wolverines’ frantic comeback did fall a few points short of upsetting one of college basketball’s marquee programs, it was unlikely the Wolverines were going to reach the Final Four this year.
Next season? That might be a different story.
The foundation, remarkably rapid considering Michigan was floundering with a 1-6 Big Ten record in January, has been poured for the future.
