Southfield Freeway Construction Starting

DEARBORN (WWJ) - If you usually use the Southfield Freeway to commute, enjoy the mobility while it lasts. It's likely to be several months before the Southfield Freeway drive is as smooth as it is now.

Construction barrels are being deployed for a major project that'll affect thousands and thousands of people, including those that don't even go near M-39 during the peak periods.

Monday is the last morning that all of the lanes will remain open. After 9:30 a.m. or so, crews will pull barrels already along the shoulder to close off the left and center lanes along the stretch of M-39 between Ford Road and I-96, which sees thousands of vehicles a day.

Work is being done on the street lighting and infrastructure involved, that will keep that stretch of the freeway down to one lane right through the month of October. The ramps along that section will also be closed to reduce congestion, along with the ramps from I-96 to southbound Southfield until mid-May.

Just something to keep in mind if you take that Southfield jog out to Metro Airport or downriver. You might consider Telegraph or Greenfield roads as possible alternates.
