'Smart Meters' Coming To Oakland County

DETROIT (WWJ) - DTE will be contacting over 300,000 Oakland County residents in the coming weeks to install new electric meters.  Spokesman Scott Simons says the new Smart meters will make it easier to take care of power outages.

"Right now we have to depend on our customers to let us to let us know if they have a power outage, and we'll know to a single meter whether there is a problem on that meter," says Simons. "It will allow us to determine how large the outage is immediately, how best to respond to it and that will allow for faster Restoration when there are power outages."

The new meters will also mean that customers will get an actual and not an estimated bill each month.
