State Trooper Killed In Rollover Accident

TAYMOUTH TWP. (WWJ) – A Michigan State Police trooper from the Bridgeport Post was killed after his patrol car rolled over in a Birch Run Road ditch.

The trooper has been identified as 43-year-old Jeffrey Werda, an 11-year veteran of the force. State Police told WWJ’s Chrystal Knight he was responding to a back-up call when the accident occurred.

He was helping sheriff’s deputies from the Saginaw County area, helping them in a chase. It happened about 1:30 Wednesday morning, near Birch Run and Moorish roads in Taymouth Township.

State Police said trooper Werda apparently lost control of his car; it rolled over and came to a rest in a drainage ditch. He was transported to Covenant Hospital in Saginaw, where he was pronounced dead.

Lieutenant Patrick McGreevy spoke with WWJ about the loss of his colleague.

“This was one of the saddest days that I’ve had in my 29-year career,” McGreevy said.

“It’s very, very sad, very somber inside the Post. As expected, there’s been some tears inside the post,” he said.

The accident remains under investigation.

  4. Dan says:

Funny….. In every other news story about auto accidents, they always mention if the driver was or was not wearing their seatbelt. Censorship?

  5. Jeff says:

a man just lost his life does it really matter, think about his kids

  6. clint says:

Yes Jeff, it does matter. The news media is always quick to blame someone for not doing what they should. There has been, and always will be a ‘double standard’ for the police. My heart goes out to the children.

  7. Kevin says:

Police are exempt from wearing seatbelts; its not a double standard its the law you children. Someone had dies, and child has lost a father, and wife has lost a husband, and organization has lost a hero. These are the people you are the first to critisize for anything, yet they are the first you call when you are unable to handle your own business. Let’s also not forget, who said he was not wearing one anyways? Assumptions are for the weak!

  8. herk says:

You are right Kevin, the police are exempt. RIP Jeff. We are very proud of you.

The man was top notch. A good trooper and hell of a nice guy. He dyed protecting us. Untill you have the balls or brains to get out there and do what he did for a living dont ask such unimportant questions.

  13. Dan says:

Last I heard it was still under investigation unless you are privy to info the rest of us aren’t why not wait until they’re done before you start blaming.

  14. Aaron says:
