State Trooper Killed In Rollover Accident

TAYMOUTH TWP. (WWJ) - A Michigan State Police trooper from the Bridgeport Post was killed after his patrol car rolled over in a Birch Run Road ditch.

The trooper has been identified as 43-year-old Jeffrey Werda, an 11-year veteran of the force. State Police told WWJ's Chrystal Knight he was responding to a back-up call when the accident occurred.

He was helping sheriff's deputies from the Saginaw County area, helping them in a chase. It happened about 1:30 Wednesday morning, near Birch Run and Moorish roads in Taymouth Township.

State Police said trooper Werda apparently lost control of his car; it rolled over and came to a rest in a drainage ditch. He was transported to Covenant Hospital in Saginaw, where he was pronounced dead.

Lieutenant Patrick McGreevy spoke with WWJ about the loss of his colleague.

"This was one of the saddest days that I've had in my 29-year career," McGreevy said.

"It's very, very sad, very somber inside the Post. As expected, there's been some tears inside the post," he said.

The accident remains under investigation.
