Public Forum Will Focus On Budget Debate

DETROIT (WWJ) - While the federal budget deadline is making all of the headlines, Michigan lawmakers remain embroiled in their own ongoing budget debate.

Democratic State Representative Maureen Stapleton of Detroit is hosting a public forum Thursday night to talk about the budget proposals now on the table in Lansing.

"All of those bills have attacked collective bargaining, attacked working-class people, attacked the sovereignty of cities and citizens to elect their leadership. I'm hopeful we will have a more bipartisan effort. But, right now, nothing is happening in a bipartisan manner," Stapleton said.

Thursday evening's meeting will be held at the Detroit Police Department Central District office on Woodward Avenue at West Grand, starting at 6 p.m.

"This next 30 days is the last opportunity that citizens will have to weigh in heavily to stand and let their voices be heard, before the onslaught that started in January continues," Stapleton said.

Governor Rick Snyder has told lawmakers he would like a budget agreement for the next fiscal year in place by the end of May.
