Reward Offered In Young Woman's Death

DETROIT (WWJ) - Family and friends of a 22-year-old Detroit woman who was fatally shot last Wednesday are hoping the public will help find her killer.

CrimeStoppers is offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person who shot Brittany Coles on the city's east side.

Police say Coles was killed between 11:50 p.m. and 12:30 a.m., while making her way home from work by bus and taxi.

Detroit Police homicide detective Mike Martell believes somebody saw something that night.

"What we believe, at this point, is she got out of the cab -- may have stopped at a store, like she told her mom, or maybe she never made it to the store. At some point, somebody approached her, maybe to rob her, maybe to talk to her... What it looks like is that she didn't want to comply with whatever they wanted, so she was shot," Martel said.

Speaking to reporters, Thursday, Tamika Hodges, 32, described her cousin as a very sweet person.

"She brought light to the room, wherever she was.  Fun-loving... never had any quarrels with anyone," she said.

Hodges stressed the need for the public's help in making the gunman accountable for Cole's murder.

"Please -- anyone with information that were out around Drexel and Warren at that time.  Contact the police. If you saw anything, tell someone. We have to take our city back," Hodges said.
