Detroit 'Favorite Stop' On Round-the-world Motorcycle Journey

DETROIT (WWJ) - Tormod Amlien and his best friend just returned to their native Norway after a round-the-world journey that took them from Scandinavia to South America, Russia, the United States and Europe.  The two men made the entire journey on 1937 Nimbus motorcycles (with side cars!).

Amlien told WWJ's Jayne Bower that his favorite city, bar none, in the U.S. was Detroit.

Even though Amlien refers to the Motor City as the "Chernobyl of Capitalism" on the blog he religiously maintained during the trip, he said he also considers Detroit "fascinating" with "friendly people who are not afraid to look your in the eye, smile and say hello."

Amlien said he had heard the sensational stories about Detroit being a mecca of crime, but during his two days in the city last autumn, he said he never felt threatened or unsafe. He loved the Heidelberg Project and the Central Train Depot along with the more traditional tourist haunts like the Henry Ford.

Kevin Lentz, owner of Vintage Motorcycles in Ann Arbor served as the globe trotters' tour guide.  Lentz said the men from Norway were "delightful" and "fascinated by everything" they experienced in Detroit.
