DETROIT (WWJ) - Two city of Detroit Public Lighting Department employees are hospitalized following an early morning accident.

WWJ’s Terri Lee reports the accident happened just before 5:30 Saturday morning at the corner of Dix and Powell in Southwest Detroit.

At that hour, it was still very dark outside. According to a police spokesperson, what exactly led to the accident is still being investigated.

What is known at this point is that the two city employees were working on a utility pole that had been damaged in a previous incident.

While the workers were making repairs to the pole, they were struck by a 2000 Ford Escape. The driver of the SUV did remain at the scene. It is unknown whether the driver will face any charges.

Both workers are hospitalized in temporary serious condition.
