Walleye Run Expected To Hit Detroit River

DETROIT (WWJ) - It happens around this time every year. The walleye run is expected to start this weekend where millions of fish hit the Detroit River particularly near the Trenton Channel.

Detroit Free Press Outdoor Writer Eric Sharp says about 8 to 10 million fish run the river to come in to spawn.

"This is a time of year when we will catch a walleye, a lot of people will catch walleyes ten, 11, 12 pounds. And these are just enormous fish and the river is just full of them," Sharp says.

Sharp says most of the walleye come up from Lake Erie but some of them come down from Lake Huron and Lake St. Clair.

"This is the best walleye run probably in the world. I've seen 10 million. The walleye numbers are down a little bit now so maybe 8-million fish run the river to come in to spawn. Most of them come up from Lake Erie but some of them come down from Lake Huron and Lake St. Clair," says Sharp.
