New Jailhouse In Detroit?

DETROIT (AP) - Officials say Wayne County may buy 7.6 acres of downtown Detroit land now owned by Greektown Casino-Hotel for a new 5-story, 2,000-bed jail.

The Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News report that the county would pay $10 million for the property and give Greektown 1.2 acres that now houses administrative offices of the county sheriff.

Greektown had planned to use the land it owns for its permanent casino and hotel facility but ultimately didn't need it. The land currently used for parking.

The plan for the new jail would consolidate the county's current three jails. The deal would need approval from the Wayne County Commission.
