Mom Who Faked Son's Cancer Surrenders Parental Rights

MOUNT CLEMENS (WWJ) - The Macomb County mother who faked her son's cancer as a way to scam people out of money has given up her parental rights.

Fourty-seven year-old Carol Schnuphase of Roseville gave up her rights during a custody hearing on Thursday. Her 13-year-old son will remain in foster care until he's adopted.

Schnuphase was sentenced in March to one year in jail, six months of tethered house arrest and three years probation after pleading no contest in the case.

Schnuphase scammed thousands of dollars from donors who believed they were helping to pay for her son's medical care as he underwent chemotherapy.

Schnuphase drugged her then 12-year-old son to make him appear to have cancer. She even shaved the boy's head and laced his food with drugs, claiming he had leukemia.
