Dan Dickerson's Game Recap 4-15-11

The Detroit Tigers - with help from the Oakland A's - erupted for seven runs in the 10th inning, and made it two straight over the A's with an 8-4 win. The A's took a 1-0 lead in the third on a David DeJesus two out RBI single - and held that 1-0 lead into the ninth. Then Miguel Cabrera led off the 9th with a home run blast over the wall in right-center off A's closer Brian Fuentes, tying the game at one. Then came the crazy tenth - when the Tigers and A's scored 10 runs, after combining for just five runs in the first 18 innings of the series.Alex Avila reached on a Daric Barton error, and was sacrificed to second. A Fuentes throwing error put Avila on third with one out. Then Fuentes intentionally walked pinch-hitter Jhonny Peralta, un-intentionally walked Ryan Raburn, got to 0-2 on Brennan Boesch, and Boesch drilled a double into the right field corner to bring in two runs and give the Tigers a 3-1 lead. Then Cabrera was intentionally walked, Martinez singled in a run, another Oakland error produced two runs. An Inge bounce-out and an Avila single produced the final two runs, and the Tigers had an 8-1 lead - they scored seven runs with just three hits.

Brayan Villarreal had a tough night - but got his first Major League win by recording the final out of the 9th. He gave up three singles to start the 10th. Joaquin Benoit relieved Villarreal, gave up a groundball and a single that scored all three baserunners, but the Tigers' big lead was never really in jeopardy.

The win was the 1500th in the managerial career of Jim Leyland. He's the 19th manager to reach that milestone. Rick Porcello started and pitched well: he went six innings, and gave up just one run on seven hits (six singles), one walk and four strikeouts - and he recorded ten outs on ground balls. The Tigers have now won four in a row to get to 7-7. They'll try to make it three straight in this series tonight - Justin Verlander goes against Dallas Braden.
