Local Man Collects Donations For Injured Troops
DETROIT (WWJ) - A local man is paying a visit to some of the military's most badly-injured soldiers.
James Tignanelli is president of the Police Officers Association of Michigan. Each May, he visits patients at Walter Reed Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C.
"These are the most injured people who come back from the battles, generally amputees, closed-head injuries. These are significant injuries. Sometimes, they're hospitalized for a year or more," he said.
And he's brought them care packages--courtesy of donors. "Two of the things that are the most desirable to them are electric shavers and a small, personal DVD player...one that you can watch a movie on or play a game on."
Tignanelli said that electric shavers are preferred over disposable ones because some soldiers are on medicine that could make things problematic with a shaving cut.
Other items include "a pair of pajamas, a clean t-shirt, personal items like shampoos."
Tignanelli, himself a retired police officer, said the items aren't tax-deductible, but he said he gets great pride in thanking the troops for their efforts.
