State Police Scraps Plans For Detroit Crime Lab

DETROIT (WWJ) - The Michigan State Police is backing away from plans to putting a fully operational crime lab in the new Detroit Police Headquarters when it opens in the former MGM Grand casino.

Instead, the State now plans to open only a training center and ballistics testing lab in the new headquarters.

City Council President Charles Pugh said the change won't prevent the City from moving forward with its plans for a new headquarters.

"We knew that a previous administration committing to something is always risky, when you get a new governor and they have budgetary constraints that they have to think about as well," Pugh said.

"So, it's disappointing, but it's not a surprise," he said.

The State has been processing crime evidence for the city since 2008 when Detroit shut its own crime lab down due to  a high rate of error.
