Parents Fight To Save Head Start

FRASIER (WWJ) - Parents at a Macomb County school are telling federal budget balancers to keep their hands off the Head Start program.

The parents say anyone who has or has had a child in a head-start early education program understand the important role that this opportunity plays for millions of kids nationwide.

A group of local parents shared that message, Tuesday, with Congressman Sander Levin at Little Learners/Dooley Center in Frasier -- and they're hoping he'll share it with his fellow U.S. lawmakers.

"I'm terrified for (my daughter). She loves her Head Start program. She's excited to come to school every day," said said Warren mom Elaine Basset, who has a 3-year old daughter in Head Start.

"She's made a tremendous amount of progress with all of her skills -- letters, numbers," said Warren mom Elaine Basset, who has a 3-year old daughter in head-start," Basset said.

Basset said she's certain the program will be beneficial to her daughter's longterm success.

It's one of a few educational programs that faces funding cuts under a federal budget plan passed in the House last week.

"I hope the Senate stops it," said Congressman Levin.

"We have to get a hold of the deficit, as I said, but not increase the deficits in education," he said.

Head Start is a pre-Kindergarten educational program for children ages 3 to 5.
