Judge Denies Conyers' Request To Leave Prison

DETROIT (WWJ) - Former Detroit City Councilwoman Monica Conyers has been denied her request to finish her prison sentence at home.

In a one page ruling issued Thursday, Federal District Court Judge Avern Cohn denied Conyers' request to finish her 37 month prison sentence at home, citing  the court lacks jurisdiction to modify a defendant's sentence.

Conyers pleaded guilty in 2009 to taking a bribe for her vote on a billion dollar sludge hauling contract.

She is still contesting the plea and its under consideration by the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals.

In trying to justify her request to serve her prison time at home, Conyers said the court failed to consider her age, education, vocational skill, employment record and family ties.

She will remain at a federal prison in West Virgina for the duration of her sentence.
