Walkers Train For Breast Cancer 3-Day

DETROIT (WWJ) - With spring in full swing, more and more people are out enjoying the weather. Some are doing more than just spending time outdoors; they're beginning their training for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure.

The Komen 3-Day for the Cure encourages participants to begin training months in advance to physically prepare their bodies for the three-day, 60-mile walk. The Michigan 3-Day for the Cure will host an official Training Kick Off to help walkers get their training started on the right foot.

Registered 3-Day for the Cure walkers and those interested in participating are invited to the training session on Saturday, April 23 from 9 am until 10 am at New Balance in Farmington Hills (37606 W. 12 Mile Road). Participants of the Susan G. Komen Detroit Race for the Cure are also invited to join.

Walkers should bring water bottles, sunscreen and a hat to enjoy a three-mile training walk outdoors. According to the weather forecast, you should expect the day to be warm, sunny and breezy. Get the full forecast on our weather page.

After the walk, participants can attend a free footwear clinic to learn about what to consider when choosing your shoes and socks, get blister care tips and more.

The Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure is a 60-mile walk for women and men who want to make a personal difference in the fight to end breast cancer.

Komen 3-Day for the Cure participants raise a minimum of $2,300 and walk an average of 20 miles a day for three consecutive days, educating tens of thousands of people about breast health with every step. Funds raised impact breast cancer research and community-based breast health and education programs.

The Michigan 3-Day begins in Farmington Hills on Friday, August 13 and ends in Dearborn on Sunday, August 15.

Registration is still open for the 2011 Michigan 3-Day for the Cure, which will take place August 12-14. For more information, visit www.The3Day.org.
