Eastpointe Man Dies After Boat Capsizes

An Eastpointe man died over the weekend after a boat he was on capsized in Lake St. Clair.  A Southfield man who was on the boat was rescued and survived.

The U.S. Coast Guard says a crew from St. Clair Shores was sent to the scene east of the Clinton River after a 911 call about a boat sinking in the lake.

The Coast Guard said both men were wearing life jackets when they were pulled from the water, but 37-year old Hassen Randel of Eastpointe died.  A 48-year-old Southfield man who was operating the boat was treated for hypothermia at Mount Clemens Regional Medical Center.

As the Coast Guard arrived, officers spotted two people in the water, said Boatswain's Mate 2nd Class Justin Yurig.

``We noticed one man clinging to the hull of the boat and a second man about 10 yards away, who appeared to be unresponsive so we pulled him out first and got him on our boat and began applying CPR,'' Yurig said.

The Coast Guard said boating can be dangerous on the Great Lakes this time of year, when water temperatures remain very cold.
