DETROIT (WWJ) – According to AAA Michigan, Tuesday is the first time the average price of self-serve unleaded gas has hit $4 across the state since Sept. 19, 2008, when the average price was $4.034.

The current statewide average is $1.196 more than at the same time last year.

The average for self-serve regular rose 4.2 cents in Metro Detroit Monday, with the average now at $4.020 per gallon. The Metro Detroit average is $1.187 cents higher than last year at this time.

Dearborn-based AAA Michigan surveys 2,800 Michigan gas stations daily. It typically releases its Fuel Gauge Report each Monday, but decided to put out a special edition of its gas prices report Tuesday because the average topped $4 a gallon.

On Monday, WWJ Newsradio 950 told you the cheapest places to find gas were in Flint and Macomb, with a per gallon average of $3.70 and $3.80, respectively.

According to GasBuddy, the places to find the cheapest gas in the state on Tuesday are Shelby Township, at $3.80 per gallon, and Wayne, at $3.85 per gallon.
