Eastpointe Police Officer Injured During Traffic Stop

EASTPOINTE (WWJ) – Gratiot Avenue in Eastpointe — the scene of a traffic accident Monday night that sent a police officer to the hospital.

Police in Eastpointe tell WWJ the officer was working a traffic stop along northbound Gratiot past 9 Mile, and while outside the patrol car making an arrest, his car was struck from the back by another vehicle injuring the officer as well as the suspect being placed under arrest.

The officer, at last report, was in serious condition at an area hospital. The suspect was reported in stable condition. It’s not yet clear if alcohol, the weather or other factors led to the accident. Northbound Gratiot was closed for several hours as part of the investigation.

That’s why police officers should pull off the road whenever they can and NEVER stop on a highway. Everyone should drive to the nearest ramp, accident investigation site, parking lot or private drive.

No one’s life or health–the passenger car and it’s occupants also–for a routine traffic stop.

I cringe when I see police officers stopped on the side of the road when there is a parking lot right there.
