More than 100 DPS Students to Unveil Recommendations for Future Detroit

The day has finally arrived for more than 100 middle school students from Detroit Public Schools to unveil their plan for a better city in which they would like to live and work.

On Tuesday, May 3, these students will be joined by their teachers, parents and mentors, along with dignitaries from the City of Detroit and the Detroit School Board, as they share their recommendations for a new Detroit. From safety and security to better education and the arts, these students' visions have been detailed in a 40-page printed report that will be presented on that day as well.

This event is not child's play. It is the culmination of months of hard work and a one-day symposium sponsored by The Engineering Society of Detroit Institute  that was held on Feb. 12, in which attendees -- most from underprivileged areas of Detroit, were given a voice and allowed the opportunity to "Stand Up, Step Up, Speak Up."

"The work of the students was inspiring to us and we hope they will be to all generations," said ESDI Co-Director, Christopher J. Webb. "The inquiry, innovation, insight, and constructive suggestions provided by these students reveal an up-and-coming 'Citizenscape' dedicated to engaging education, economy, and the socio-geographical dimensions of metro Detroit."

Students were challenged with an important question: If you were envisioning "Future Detroit," what would it look like and how would you accomplish it?

They were then asked to respond in details to the following:
* What are the things that make a city cool?
* If you were envisioning "Future Detroit," what would it look like and how would you accomplish it?
* If you were 30 years old and living in Detroit, what would be your vision in order to live and work happily there?
* If you were a future leader of Detroit, how would you accomplish your vision of Detroit?

The students' responses along with their detailed blueprint for a Future Detroit will be made public for the first time on May 3, 2011, in the hopes that city and state leaders will listen to what they have to say, and move their recommendations forward.

This event is open to the public and will be held at Compuware Corporation Headquarters, One Campus Martius, Detroit.
