Low Voter Turn-Out For Elections

DETROIT (WWJ) - Many local elections in the metro Detroit area Tuesday, where many voters were deciding whether to increase city millages.

WWJ's Political Reporter Tim Kiska has the results that have been recorded:

In Garden City--voters shot down a millage increase by a 56-44 percent margin. That millage would have brought in $6.6 million dollars for police and fire protection. But voters said no.

Garden City Mayor Randy Walker: "We'll carry on, It'll be a different city than it's been. The residents can't expect the same level of city services when we've got to cut $4 million out of the budget.

In Harper Woods, city officials wanted to merge the police and fire departments to save money. Voters said no to that. Harper Woods Mayor Kenneth Poynter says the city will be faced with budget cuts.

In Southfield, it was thumbs up to a millage increase -- by a 5-to-1 margin. Most of that money will go to maintain police and fire service. That kind of margin is unheard of.

In Hazel Park, voters approved a millage for police and fire -- this by a 3-to-1 margin.

Hazel Park City Manager Ed Klobacher tells WWJ it was an either/or situation: Say yes to the millage, or risk losing half of the city's police and firefighters:

"In order to preserve police and fire protection in the manner that our residents have become accustomed to, it was critical that our residents passed this millage and they did so. I'm so very proud that they took the time to learn about the issue," says Klobacher.

Voters in the Northville School District approved a measure that would help build and repair schools.

In Clawson, voters gave thumbs up to a proposal that would buy new computers and equipment for schools.

Madison Heights voters approved two millage proposals.

Voters in Romulus and Ferndale also approved revenue requests.

Voters in River Rouge voted against the operating millage.

In Bloomfield Hills, voters approved the charter amendment.
