Police Search For Suspect Who Stole Earthquake Donation Box

WATERFORD (WWJ) - Waterford Township police are looking for a man suspected of stealing a donation box that was to be given to the victims of the Japan earthquake and tsunami.

At 12:15 Wednesday morning, police responded to the 7-11 store located at 11 S. Cass Lake Road on a larceny complaint from a store clerk, who reported a monetary donation box was stolen from the counter near the front cash register.

The clerk said a suspicious male was in the store earlier and may have taken the box. The male is described as being caucasian, 5'5" and 160 lbs. with a scruffy beard.

According to the clerk, the suspect asked for a 40 oz. beer that he had to go to the back of the store to retrieve, leaving the man alone at the front counter.

The clerk thinks around $10 in bills and change was in the box at the time. The money collected was to be given to the victims of the Japan tsunami.

If located, the suspect could face felony larceny in a building charge.

Police are currently investigating the store's security video that may have captured the incident.
