Big Turnout For "Back To Work" Job Fair

HAMTRAMCK (WWJ) - Job-seekers flocked to Hamtramck by the hundreds, Wednesday, for the 3rd Annual Back to Work Job Fair.

The Arab American and Chaldean Council (ACC) Hamtramck Jobs Education and Training (JET) Program, in partnership with Southeast Michigan Community Alliance (SEMCA) and Michigan Works hosted the public event, which ended at 1 p.m.

Standing at the front of the line early Wednesday morning was job-seeker Mauricio Rushton, dressed for success in a suit and tie.

"I would like to find something in the customer service field or marketing. If not, no problem... clerk job... sweeping floors, what have you. I'm open," he said.

WWJ's Ron Dewey spoke with several people in line who have been out of work for two or three years, including Yvonne Jones, who's looking for work as a caregiver.

"I'm quite sure I'm going to get something," Jones said.

Dennis Terrell said he lost his manufacturing job in Warren when the business closed shop and went out of state.

"I just thank God that they've got this job fair going... I'm looking for machinery, shipping and receiving. I've got a lot of skills. So, hopefully, I can land something," he said.

Companies ranging from Wal-Mart and Lowe's to local banks, hospital groups and the Detroit Police Department had representatives on hand.

More than 2,700 people were expected to attend.
