Troubled Trees

What's wrong with my evergreens?  They look like goners.

I have several trees in my backyard that were nice and green and healthy last year, and now they're practically kaput:  several different shades of brown and rust.  Mostly rust.  And I've been seeing other trees all over town with the same problem.  What's going on?

Are they a) dead or b) dying or c) dormant or d) something else?

Dan Ingram, the General Manager of Bordine's says don't give up on them yet,  it might be winter damage.

"Winter damage can definitely take its toll on evergreens. They don't go dormant, their roots can't take up moisture in the winter, and they dry out."

Ingram says make sure there's moisture to the tree now, and fertilizer, and if the tree is still alive, you should start seeing buds in the next ten days.  He says there is also a product called Wilt Stop that can be used to protect your plant NEXT winter.

Ingram says the problem could also be a fungus called needle rust.  He says it CAN be controlled with fungicide.

(If left untreated...it can spread to other trees.)

If you want an official diagnosis, Ingram says, bring in a sample to Bordine's.

If you're not seeing growth within the next ten days, he says, hope is starting to dwindle.
