'Bridesmaids' Takes The Cake, Baby

Vicki Briganti – WWJ-TV Writer / Producer / Editor

Bridesmaids. There's something about this movie that sticks like a gourmet cupcake in your face. It's raunchy, gross, and quirky rolled into one wickedly funny feature.

Bridesmaids is a female buddy comedy co-written by and starring Kristen Wiig (Paul, Date Night), an alumnae of Saturday Night Live. She teams up with producer Judd Apatow (Knocked Up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin). Her fellow SNL sidekick, Maya Rudolph (Grown Ups, Away We Go), plays her BFF.

The brief synopsis: Annie's (Wiig) childhood friend Lillian (Rudolph) is getting married. Annie is asked to be her maid of honor. Annie joins the other bridesmaids – a group Lillian refers to as "a stone cold pack of weirdoes" – for bridal parties, dress fittings, and a Vegas bachelorette weekend gone awry. The result is zany fun and sidesplitting antics galore. In the vein of There's Something About Mary and American Pie, Bridesmaids pushes the comedic envelope with a bathroom scene you won't soon forget.

Lillian, the Blushing Bride's, bridesmaids:

  • Annie, BFF: Maid of Dishonor
  • Rita, cousin: Real Mother
  • Becca, co-worker: The Innocent One
  • Megan, future sister-in-law: The Wildcard
  • Helen, wife of the groom's boss: Little Miss Perfect

The opening scene sets the R-rated tone with an "adult sleepover." The predominate theme: Friends face challenges as they move in different directions in life. Will someone get left out? Can you still be friends with a childhood friend? Can you ever trust someone in a relationship? If you hold on for one more day, will things go your way?

Even the minor characters are hilarious. Annie's English roommates have some of the best one-liners in the movie: "Wanna see my tattoo? I got it free from a guy in a van."

Keep an eye out for Jill Clayburgh (Academy Award nominee An Unmarried Woman) as Annie's mother; she's in AA but never been an alcoholic. Bridesmaids was Clayburgh's last theatrical release before her death. She passed away in November from chronic leukemia.

This film is a perfect excuse for a girls' night out. I saw it with my friend, Shelley. The ladies sitting around us couldn't stop laughing. If you liked The Hangover, I think you'll enjoy this, too.

Bridesmaids opens in theatres May 13th. The official website is www.bridesmaidsmovie.com.
