CJPS In Deal For Wheelchair Technology

Auburn Hills-based CJPS Medical Systems said Thursday that it has entered into an exclusive worldwide technology license agreement with Independence Technology LLC, a Johnson & Johnson company, to manufacture and distribute a novel power-assist technology to enhance manual wheelchairs.

This technology was previously integrated with a wheelchair frame, and sold by Independence Technology under the Independence iGlide brand.

CJPS Medical Systems will manufacture the products at its world headquarters in Auburn Hills and distribute them globally on both an OEM basis as well as an aftermarket add-on.

This power-assist technology is comprised of a patented minicomputer system which allows wheelchair users to move in an effortless and resistant-free manner. Not only does this technology allow the user to move much more easily on rough terrain such as grass or inclines, but it also automatically slows the wheelchair down to a stop when going downhill without having to use hands as the braking system.

On the products that CJPS Medical Systems will use this technology, the controller and battery are concealed under the wheelchair seat, giving the appearance of a standard manual wheelchair, and only adding a minimal amount of load, making this powered wheelchair a fraction of the weight of powered wheelchairs. The battery provides up to 9 miles of sustainable travel on a 3.5 hour charge.

This technology has been the subject of significant clinical studies by clinicians, such as physical and rehabilitation therapists, resulting in undisputable clinical benefits to the wheelchair user of this power-assist technology, by greatly reducing the force, effort and wear and tear to the shoulders, arms and hands of full-time wheelchair users.
