Issues With Getting Older, And Nala Makes Her Detroit TV Debut

In this week's Street Beat, we talk about Senior Citizens and the issues that come with getting older.

We talk with Kevin Hatman of the Michigan Humane Society about pets for seniors and an animal adoption fair being held at the Detroit Zoo this weekend.

My cute doggy, Nala, makes a special guest appearance.  Why?  To explain the wonderful feeling of companionship with a pet.  Nala had a lot of fun being in the studio.  I ALWAYS enjoy her company, so it makes sense if some older folks want a pet.  Kevin recommends seniors getting a pet that reflects their lifestyle.  If they are laid back, Kevin suggests an older pet.  If they are very active, then getting a puppy or kitten would be a great match!

Later in the show, we talk with Tina Rowley of Home Instead Senior Care.  It is a program that helps seniors maintain their independence by living at home.  It also focuses on adult children coping with the problems of caring for elderly parents.  As you will see on the show, this hits close to home with me.  I can say on a personal level, it is very difficult to see my parents get older.  Mommy and Daddy Chowdhry have always been superheroes in my eyes.  To see them get older and start to become weaker, it's heart-wrenching.  That is why organizations like Home Instead Senior Care are much needed in our communities.

For more on this topic, watch "Street Beat" this Sunday at 11:30 am on CW50.
