Royal Oak Parking Meter Increase

ROYAL OAK (WWJ) – Headed to downtown Royal Oak anytime soon? If so, take along plenty of quarters to feed the parking meters. The City Commission has voted to jack up the price to park on certain streets.

Once the 300 new parking meters are installed, it will cost Royal Oak patrons $1 an hour for on-street parking in the central business district, between Lincoln and 11 Mile. The increase also stretches to cover the area between Troy Street and West Street.

The current cost is 50-cents an hour, but the commission has voted to double that rate.

At a recent city commission meeting, downtown business owners voiced their opposition to the new parking prices, claiming the city will chase business to nearby communities like Berkley, Birmingham and Ferndale, where parking rates are cheaper, or to downtown Clawson, where parking is free.

What do you think of the parking meter increase? Will it affect your plans to spend time in downtown Royal Oak? Leave us your comments below.

I go to Clawson – but watch the cops – they park in one of those parallel parking spots on the street to catch speeders (25 speed limit after you leave Royal Oak), dark Dodge charger – no markings or light bar. This probably makes up for the free parking – LOL

I recently moved to ferndale from out of state. I have seen so e outrageous parking meters before, but royal oaks parking situation tops it. I got a ticket from a parking meter cop as I was putting more money in the meter. He claimed that his gps said that the meter had run out so it did not matter if he did not see it empty. He also told me that I had better put money in the meter now because if a different cop came by, they could add another ticket onto m car…. I don’t know about that, but I have boycotted the royal oak area. It’s a shame, because I know there are a lot of small local businesses that could use my patronage, but there are other places to shop with cheaper meters and more fair parking charges.

just got my first R.O. parking ticket last month. $10 ticket, a little high, $25 after 72 hrs – Rediculous. I wont be back to the downtown area. I wonder how the price of parking and the tickets have adversely affected businesses since the price hike last year? I’m sure i’m not the only person who shares my opinion.
