Royal Oak Parking Meter Increase

ROYAL OAK (WWJ) - Headed to downtown Royal Oak anytime soon? If so, take along plenty of quarters to feed the parking meters. The City Commission has voted to jack up the price to park on certain streets.

Once the 300 new parking meters are installed, it will cost Royal Oak patrons $1 an hour for on-street parking in the central business district, between Lincoln and 11 Mile. The increase also stretches to cover the area between Troy Street and West Street.

The current cost is 50-cents an hour, but the commission has voted to double that rate.

At a recent city commission meeting, downtown business owners voiced their opposition to the new parking prices, claiming the city will chase business to nearby communities like Berkley, Birmingham and Ferndale, where parking rates are cheaper, or to downtown Clawson, where parking is free.

What do you think of the parking meter increase? Will it affect your plans to spend time in downtown Royal Oak? Leave us your comments below.
